Independent Legionella Risk Assessments Across Wiltshire

Managing the risk of Legionella is an important part of responsible water-system management.

A Legionella risk assessment considers the water systems and associated equipment within a premises, identifies conditions that could allow Legionella bacteria to proliferate or be transmitted, and assesses the measures in place to control those risks.

Aegir Compliance carries out independent Legionella risk assessments for a range of commercial and organisational premises across Wiltshire.

Our approach combines detailed site inspection with practical technical assessment. We don’t simply produce a checklist or generic report: we assess the actual water systems present, document relevant findings and provide recommendations that are specific to the premises.

Whether you are responsible for an office, care setting, commercial property, accommodation, educational premises or another type of building, we can provide an independent assessment of your water-system risks.

What Does a Legionella Risk Assessment Involve?

A Legionella risk assessment should be proportionate to the complexity of the water systems and the risks associated with the premises.

Our assessments typically include an examination of the relevant hot and cold water systems and associated equipment, together with consideration of how those systems are operated and managed.

Depending on the premises and system complexity, this can include:

  • Reviewing available information about the water systems
  • Identifying relevant hot and cold water services
  • Inspecting water-system components and outlets
  • Identifying potential areas of Legionella risk
  • Considering water temperatures and temperature-control arrangements
  • Identifying little-used or redundant outlets
  • Considering storage tanks, calorifiers and other relevant components
  • Reviewing existing control measures
  • Considering monitoring, inspection and maintenance arrangements
  • Reviewing available records and documentation
  • Identifying gaps in existing control arrangements
  • Providing practical recommendations for managing identified risks
  • Producing a clear written assessment for the responsible person

The precise scope of an assessment depends on the premises, the water systems installed and the circumstances of the assessment.

What You Receive

Our objective is to provide a report that is useful to the person responsible for managing the premises — not simply a document that sits in a compliance folder.

Following the assessment, you receive a detailed report setting out the findings and relevant recommendations.

Depending on the scope of the assessment, the report can include:

Site and system information

Relevant information about the premises and water systems assessed.

Identified risks

A clear explanation of significant findings and conditions that may contribute to Legionella risk.

Control measures

Details of existing measures and an assessment of their suitability where applicable.

Recommendations

Practical recommendations addressing identified deficiencies or areas requiring attention.

Supporting evidence

Relevant photographs, observations, measurements and other evidence gathered during the assessment.

Clear documentation

A structured report that can be retained as part of your water-system management documentation.

If recommendations are made, they are intended to help the responsible person understand what needs to be addressed and why.

Why Use an Independent Legionella Risk Assessor?

A Legionella risk assessment should provide an objective assessment of the risks associated with a water system.

Aegir Compliance operates independently and does not undertake remedial water-hygiene work as part of its assessment service.

That means recommendations are not linked to a requirement for you to purchase subsequent remedial work from us.

If remedial work, monitoring or other specialist services are recommended, you remain free to appoint an appropriate contractor or service provider.

For clients, this provides a straightforward distinction between assessing the risk and selling the solution.

Our role is to identify and explain the risks and provide appropriate recommendations.

What Standards and Guidance Apply to Legionella Risk Assessments?

Legionella risk management in the UK is supported by guidance and standards including the Health and Safety Executive’s Approved Code of Practice L8 (Legionnaires’ disease: The control of legionella bacteria in water systems) and associated HSG274 guidance.

Relevant British Standards may also apply depending on the nature and scope of the assessment.

Aegir Compliance uses relevant current guidance and standards when carrying out assessments, taking account of the specific water systems and circumstances of each premises.

The assessment is intended to help the responsible person understand the risks associated with the premises and the control measures that should be considered.

When Should a Legionella Risk Assessment Be Reviewed?

A Legionella risk assessment should not be regarded as a document that is completed once and then forgotten.

The assessment should remain appropriate to the premises and its water systems.

A review may be appropriate when there are significant changes to the building, water systems, occupancy or management arrangements, or where there is reason to believe that the existing assessment is no longer valid.

Examples can include:

  • Changes to water-system configuration
  • Building alterations or refurbishment
  • Changes in use or occupancy
  • Installation or removal of water-system equipment
  • Changes to management arrangements
  • Identification of previously unknown system components
  • Evidence that existing control measures may not be effective
  • Significant changes in the population potentially exposed
  • Other circumstances that could affect the validity of the existing assessment

The appropriate review arrangements depend on the individual premises and circumstances.

If you are unsure whether your existing assessment remains suitable, we can provide an independent review.

What Happens After a Legionella Risk Assessment?

The assessment is only part of an effective Legionella management process.

Where the assessment identifies actions or improvements, the responsible person should consider those findings and determine the appropriate response.

Depending on the findings, this may involve:

  • Improving temperature-control arrangements
  • Addressing little-used outlets
  • Updating records
  • Reviewing monitoring arrangements
  • Investigating system modifications
  • Removing redundant components
  • Improving management procedures
  • Obtaining specialist remedial or maintenance services

Aegir Compliance can provide further water hygiene consultancy where an independent technical opinion is required to help interpret assessment findings or determine appropriate next steps.

We do not undertake remedial work as part of our independent assessment service.
